Tips for the Reading test

Taking Tests

The Reading test has 40 questions across three passages in 60 minutes. Here is how to approach it.

Manage your time

Aim for about 20 minutes per passage. If you spend too long on one question, skip it and come back.

Read the questions first

Before reading the passage, scan the questions. This tells you what information to look for.

True / False / Not Given

This is the most commonly mistaken question type. Not Given means the information is simply absent from the text — it does not mean the statement is wrong. Do not assume.

Matching Headings

Read the first and last sentence of each paragraph first. The main idea is usually there.

Use the Answer Review

After submitting, use the Answer Review section to see exactly which questions you got wrong and what the correct answers were. This is more useful than just looking at your band score.

Your Coach will flag question types you consistently struggle with after two or more tests. Pay attention to those patterns.
