How accurate is AI scoring?
Scoring & Feedback
IELTSprep uses large language models (GPT-4) to score Writing and Speaking. For Reading and Listening, scoring is exact — there is a single correct answer per question.
For Writing and Speaking
AI scoring is a close approximation of human examiner scoring. In most cases, results are within 0.5 band of what a trained examiner would give. However, AI scoring is not perfect, and occasional outliers occur — especially for unconventional responses or very high band levels (8.5–9.0).
What AI scoring is good for
- Identifying clear weaknesses (e.g. grammar errors, poor task achievement)
- Tracking improvement over time
- Getting instant feedback at scale
What AI scoring is not
- An official IELTS score — it cannot be used for applications
- A replacement for human feedback on final exam preparation
Use IELTSprep scores as a directional guide, not an absolute measurement. If your IELTSprep band is consistently 7.0, your real exam score is likely to be in the 6.5–7.5 range.
